Sensitive teeth?

What causes sensitive teeth?

  • Sensitive teeth occur when the dentine (second layer of the tooth) becomes exposed.
  • Dentine contains tiny fluid-filled tubes, or tubules, that connect back to the nerve at the centre of the tooth.  Anything that makes the fluid in the exposed tubules move up or down (eg food or drinks that are too hot/cold/sweet/sour, or even touch or cold air) will excite the nerve and cause pain.
  • Further problems can develop if the sensitivity becomes too painful for normal tooth cleaning.
  • Gum recession or loss of tooth enamel are common causes of dentine exposure.
  • Gum recession is usually a direct result of gum disease and/or over brushing.

Dentine Hypersensitivity

  • 2 in 5 New Zealanders suffer from hypersensitivity, leading to unnecessary lifestyle and diet modification.
  • Gum recession affects most adults worldwide, resulting in exposed dentine and increased occurence of sensitivity.
  • Yet, relief from hypersensitivity can be found by simply using a toothpaste such as Sensodyne.

I have sensitive teeth - what can I do?

The good news is that effective treatment is available for the pain of sensitive teeth and the early gum disease that is often the underlying cause.

You can take action to end the pain and help stop gum disease in its tracks by:

  • Asking your dentist to assess the problem and give you advice/treatment.  Obvious causes of sensitivity need to be eliminated like dental decay, broken teeth or problems with existing dental restorations.  Regular dental visits and gum maintenance treatment are essential and modification of dietary and lifestyle factors can help to aid reduction of oral acidity which can increase the risk of tooth sensitivity and dental decay.
  • Use a soft bristled toothbrush with a small head and rounded bristles using a gentle technique.
  • Brush twice daily with an everyday sensitivity toothpaste such as Sensodyne.
  • For additional protection against tooth sensitivity and decay consider use of the remineralising creme GC Tooth Mousse.

Sensodyne toothpaste is recommended for regular, twice-a-day use

  • Sensodyne has been specially formulated for everyday use to protect against the pain of sensitive teeth.
  • Used twice daily, Sensodyne can build a barrier against pain and help prevent the return of sensitive teeth.
  • Sensodyne toothpaste offers full fluoride protection (with the exception of Sensodyne Original) to fight cavities and plaque and strengthen tooth enamel.
  • Sensodyne has been recommended by dentists worldwide for over 40 years.

Sensodyne oral care products, including toothpaste and toothbrush help reduce abrasion and irritation, and also help to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

"The Sensodyne Toothbrush is the best manual toothbrush I have ever used.  It ticks all the boxes as to what an ideal toothbrush should be.  I recommend it to my patients."
